The sonic screwdriver is a tool used by Dr Who. Over the years the screwdriver has been put to many uses but it is generally used by the Doctor to open any lock or to dismantle any type of equipment.

 

The screwdriver first appeared on Dr. Who in 1968 and was introduced as a multi functional tool however, some of the programme's writers became concerned that the Doctor was becoming overly reliant on this "fix all" gadget and in later series the use of the sonic screwdriver was watered down a little. The tool was written completely out of the Dr. Who series (during the fifth Doctor era).

 

From 2005 the screwdriver sonic underwent something of a renaissance. Written back into the series the original screwdriver used was rather fragile and prone to break. At the time a toy version had been launched and the production crew were so impressed with it's resilience that they ordered the original moulds from the toy manufacturers to use in the programmes.

 

The sonic screwdriver went from strength to strength and unlike previous writers who feared the tool was becoming an easy fix for any situation the new writers embraced the screwdriver and gave it even greater functionality ! The new tool was capable of fixing electrical equipment, operating the Tardis remotely, welding metal and even possessed healing prooperties.
